A white girl who is better with the dead than the living falls for a black basketball player headed for the NBA, but corpses and basketball aside, sometimes love truly is colorblind.
Ruthie Miller avoids the land of the living as much as possible… literally… she does hair and make-up for the “living-impaired” that come through her grandparents’ funeral home. When other kids are socializing, she talks to her parents’ ashes. Stephen Allen is a basketball star whose father is all-too-proud of his status as a successful black man, and urges Stephen to feel the same. But Stephen becomes enamored with Ruthie, a creepy white girl who shows him the beauty of diversity and making your own way in life. The jokes, hysterical accidents, and puppy love fall aside when Ruthie discovers a dark secret about Stephen’s father, who then sabotages Stephen’s relationship with Ruthie out of spite. Stephen refuses to follow in his father’s footsteps but Ruthie will have to decide if she’s willing to tough it out in an interracial relationship with the only guy she’s ever loved.
