_ What
do you do when your world explodes? Do
you thank God you aren't standing in range of the blast? Do you stop looking people in the eye because
you know they are going to apologize for your loss, and the last thing you want
to admit is that you wish you'd been in
that hallway, too. Do you start to hate
the dead kid who brought three guns to school and killed fifteen others the
same way he did when he opened fire?
Rain Harvey is sick that April Fool's Day when a shooter takes over her school. She first thinks it's a prank 911 call. By noon, she realizes Brian Kirby, her boyfriend of two years, is among the dead. All she has left of him are his journals. Inasmuch as she thinks she knows Brian, she's not prepared for his legacy, and while reeling with her own devastating grief, she's even less prepared for what's gotten into the sleepy, small town she's lived in her whole life. It's a predominantly white community that believes it knows the meaning of equality. But when the shooter is black and poor, Rain realizes the final death count won't end at the school. |
