Ten years ago, Gabriel Martin's sister was brutally murdered. He and his brother, Sam, have struggled to overcome the guilt, resulting in both of them taking dangerous jobs. As a fireman, Gabriel's devoted his life to protecting others. Yet no matter how many people he saves, he can't resurrect Jessie. The pain never leaves, keeping him from understanding his own goodness. It's only when he's the first responder to a brutal attack against Dr. Maddie Gilcrest that he realizes he can make a difference. Still, there are ten years of pain Gabriel is sinking beneath. Maddie struggles with her own fears. She can't offer him absolution any more than he can change her past. But sometimes love is enough.
By Jaime (Amazon Review)I found this book on Smashwords and read the sample. When I ran out of the sample, I had to hunt down my credit card to get the rest of the book. LOL. Such an amazing story! I love Gabriel and Maddie's characters and their strength despite heartbreak and fear. I love how Gabriel went above and beyond what any normal Good Samaritan would do to help Maddie through her ordeal. He kept saying that anybody would do the same thing, but I don't think so. Just shows what a good person he is. And I love that despite Maddie's very rational fears and trust issues, that she trusts Gabriel and feels safe with him. She has such a wonderful friend in Yolanda and Becca was a good addition to the book as well. I like when characters realize that they should treat people a little better and discover friends that they didn't know they had. Loved Sam and Tammy and their connection before Maddie's ordeal. The emotions and actions are extremely well written and I couldn't stop reading until the end. Loved it!
